
In Chennai, a tragic incident occurred at the Aavin plant in Tiruvallur district, resulting in the death of a 30-year-old female employee named K Umarani. Her death was caused by her dupatta getting entangled in a conveyor belt, leading to a serious throat injury. Following the incident, Varun Kumar, the plant supervisor, was arrested for negligence that contributed to Umarani's death. Aavin management took action by suspending two employees and initiating disciplinary measures against five others. The government promised compensation to Umarani's family and announced plans to implement uniform and safer dress codes to prevent similar accidents in the future.
Umarani, from Bommiampatti in Salem, had recently joined the Aavin plant and was working in the packaging section when the tragic accident occurred. Despite safety measures in place, her clothing became caught in the machinery, ultimately resulting in her death.
Officials highlighted the importance of reinforcing safety protocols, especially for female employees working in hazardous areas such as conveyor belts. Discussions were ongoing about introducing overcoats as a safer alternative to traditional attire, while respecting cultural practices.
The Minister for Dairy Development emphasized the significance of prioritizing employee safety and ensuring immediate compensation for Umarani's family, who are left grieving her loss.SA Ponnusamy from the TN Milk Dealers Welfare Association stated that Aavin is currently in discussions with the Tiruvallur collector to secure appropriate compensation and ensure timely settlement of terminal benefits for the individual's family.
